Alton Morris

Here's another photo from the Chippenham Folk Festival (which happens at the Spring Bank Holiday in Chippenham, Wiltshire and this is its 37th Year).

This isn't a brilliant photo as it shows the band on stage but not the dancers. However they are one of my favourites due to their energetic dancing and colourful style. They are a band of the Border tradition, which as far as I can tell just means that they like painting their faces.

As part of their current tour this Austrian band appeared this year at the Chippenham Folk Festival, which happens at the Spring Bank Holiday in Chippenham, Wiltshire (this is its 37th Year). They were dynamic and atmospheric.

Moving Great Chalfield Sheep

Returning from the monthly Quiet Garden at Great Chalfield, my car journey was delayed by the local farmer moving his sheep between fields a mile or so apart.

An unusual sight even for rural Wiltshire!

Filming Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1)

We had some fun the other evening watching filming of "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" (a book by Thomas Hardy) a few yards from our house. The transformation of the street was fascinating, and the dining room of some neighbours was also used.

The other evening we watched filming of "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" (a book by Thomas Hardy) a few yards from our house. This made me wonder whether the filming we saw going on at Great Chalfield Manor was for the same film.

I think that it should be an illustration for my business site - Finding True North - as it speaks of the confusion we all feel at times about which direction to go!

Christmas Cake 2007

I think I started a tradition last year of photographing our family Christmas Cake. I think we have another tradition - which is the inclusion of an "Innocent Smoothie" hat.

Great Chalfield Manor

Great Chalfield Manor is a local National Trust property with pretty gardens. It is one of those manors whose grounds contain the Parish Church. This photo shows the apple store and a small part of the gardens, with the lake in the foreground. The lake is fed by a natural spring, and is teeming with large fish - mainly carp and a few trout I think. I have seen woodpeckers and a kingfisher in the grounds previously.

It is part of the Quiet Garden network, and a "Quiet Garden" is held on the first Tuesday of most months. There is the opportunity to spend time quietly, thinking or in prayer, in the church or gardens. A short meditation is led in the church after lunch.

I find it a beautiful and tranquil place to take time for myself, but with others whom I have come to know, in stillness.

Sometimes I pass things without noticing. Today, stopped in traffic, I noticed this millennium sculpture in Bradford on Avon for the first time.

I like to think about the imagery in the depiction of the dove.

On Saturday we enjoyed a day with friends at the Chippenham Folk Festival. The High Street witnessed many different groups of Morris Dancers (I particularly liked this drummer) and there were many other musicians performing as well as stalls.

The best way to find a sheltered mooring in Portsmouth Harbour last night was in the lee of several retired naval ships. Here's one of them. This does make Portsmouth harbour feel a bit like a ships' graveyard.

London Dali Exhibition

Today I enjoyed a walk along the south bank of the River Thames, while waiting for an appointment, and discovered some sculptures by Dali placed there as part of an exhibition.

Fellowship Afloat

Fellowship Afloat, Tollesbury, near Chelmsford. A charity offering sailing courses, with accommodation on this lightship.

Enjoyed a holiday for the week after Easter, doing the RYA Dinghy Sailing Course levels 1 & 2.

We planted lots of bulbs last Autumn, including crocuses and snowdrops for which the time was a bit late. Will they come up this Spring?

Yes, but maybe not in the right order! The daffodil shoots were visible first, then some crocuses flowering, followed by a few snowdrops.
